Language Access Introduction Videos

The following links are short informational videos that provide an excellent introducton to the rights that limited English proficient individuals have in the United States and the obligations that many agencies and organizations have under Title VI and Executive Order 13166.

Breaking Down the Barriers: Translating Limited English Proficiency Policy into Practice (Video is also available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean)

The Department of Justice (DOJ) produced this video to explain the rights of limited English proficient (LEP) individuals under Title VI of the Civil Right Act of 1964. It describes the requirements of federal agencies under Executive Order 13166 to provide language access and implementation regulations.

Understanding and Abiding by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964

"The video was produced by DOJ to explains the protections of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, and national origin in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance, the individuals who are covered by these protections, the entities that must follow this law, and how Title VI is enforced."

Language Access: Your Right to an Interpreter (5 minutes):

Legal Services of New Jersey produced this video to explain the rights that a person who is limited English proficient has when accessing services from a government agency or federally funded organization. The majority of the video is applicable to all parts of the United States; however, there is a small section that focuses on New Jersey specific law.

Language Access 101: Incorporating Language Access Laws into Your Own Legal Practice (20 minutes):

Northwest Justice Project produced a short training video funded by the Legal Services Corporation to train attorneys on the basics of language access and the law. The video focuses on Washington State; however, the majority of the training is applicable to all states nationwide.
