Hands Off Medicaid Day of Action

This Thursday, February 6 is a national Day of Action to protect Medicaid. The new administration, in concert with Congress, plans massive cuts to Medicaid that will strip health insurance away from millions of people across the country. In Massachusetts, our neighbors will lose access to needed health care, with children and older adults and individuals with disabilities suffering the most.

Our Congressional Delegation needs your support to fight off these cuts. They need to hear from constituents to know that protecting Medicaid matters. They need stories about how MassHealth makes a difference in your life and the lives of our families, neighbors, and clients.

Call to Action:

  1. This Thursday, February 6, Contact your Congressperson: 866-426-2631
  2. Thank them for their support of Medicaid
  3. Tell them how important MassHealth is to you
  4. Urge them to take action to stop cuts to Medicaid!

Be well,

1. This Thursday, February 6, Contact your Congressperson – 866-426-2631

Our Congresspeople want to hear from us – and specifically they need stories. Stories about how MassHealth matters to people in Massachusetts will help them advocate for Medicaid and make the case that it is worth protecting.

On Thursday, February 6, call the above number, which will route you to your representative.

2. Thank them for their support for Medicaid

The current threats to Medicaid come from the new administration and the Republican majority in Congress: they have released a list of $2.3 trillion in Medicaid cuts that slash funding in order to expand tax cuts for billionaires and big corporations.

This is not in keeping with Massachusetts values. Our Massachusetts Congressional Delegation has helped pass legislation and supported state initiatives requiring federal approval that have strengthened Medicaid, expanding access to needed health care for millions across the country and many thousands in Massachusetts. We need to let them know we are again counting on them to protect Medicaid.

Thank our Massachusetts Congresspeople for their ongoing support for Medicaid.

3. Tell them how important MassHealth is to you

Share any stories you have about why MassHealth matters to you, as a member or an advocate or a provider.

MassHealth protects over 2 million people in Massachusetts – that’s almost one third of the Massachusetts population:

  • One in two children in Massachusetts access needed care through MassHealth.
  • 327,000 older adults and individuals with disabilities who are Medicare beneficiaries rely on MassHealth for help with premiums, co-pays and deductibles, as well as to access services not covered by Medicare, such as needed long-term care in their homes or in nursing facilities.
  • MassHealth creates and supports jobs in the health care sector in Massachusetts, including around 50% of revenues for community health centers and nursing facilities.

4. Urge them to take action to stop cuts to Medicaid!

Cuts take different forms. Mandatory work requirements are a way to cut funding, with no benefit to the people of Massachusetts. Nearly 75% of MassHealth members work. For the remaining group, mostly children, elderly, and people with disabilities, work requirements will only add red tape and administrative costs to MassHealth – money that could otherwise go care. Block grant funding will result in cuts to MassHealth, as a fixed funding amount will not adjust with enrollment, need, health care costs, or inflation.

Tell your Congressperson -- Don’t support work requirements. Don’t support block grants.

Hands Off Medicaid!
