Supported Decisions

The Center for Public Representation and Nonotuck Resource Associates have an ongoing pilot project using Supported Decision-Making (SDM) as an alternative to guardianship. In the pilot, one of the first in the United States, participants -- people under or at risk of guardianship -- design a system of supports to help them make decisions. They then sign a SDM agreement that is designed to allow them to make their own decisions and to avoid having a substituted decision maker (a guardian) appointed for them.
