MLRI’s Analysis of the Governor’s House 1 FY24 State Budget:

Each year, MLRI reviews and analyzes selected sections of the State Budget that focus on basic benefits, health care, housing and child welfare. Click here for our analysis of Governor Healey’s first “House 1” budget for fiscal year (FY) 2024 - this budget cycle starts July 1, 2023 and ends June 30, 2024.

This is the first step in the upcoming FY24 Budget deliberations. House Ways and Means is expected to release its proposed budget in April, the Senate Ways and Means in May and then both branches meet in “Conference Committee” in June to work out the difference. NOW is the time to be communicating with State Reps and Senators about your budget priorities!

Western MA progress report on ending hunger with very special guest Congressman Jim McGovern

Congressman McGovern was instrumental in creating a White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health. The Conference launched the national goal of ending hunger in the nation by 2030 while tackling preventable diet-related diseases. In Massachusetts, there are many efforts to take up this charge, while also committing to have this work strengthen farms and the food system. Western MA organizations are co-hosting an event with Congressman McGovern to debrief, connect, and strategize on how to end hunger in MA by 2030.

End to Emergency Allotments: Status update on state funds, FRAC webinar, resources

Governor Healey’s recent proposal for DTA to issue 3 months of state-funded SNAP benefits at 40% of the amount households received in Emergency Allotments is making its way through the legislature. This proposal was included in her FY23 “Supplemental Budget’ released on January 30, which also includes funding for continuing universal school meals for the rest of the year, funds to replace “skimmed” SNAP benefits, and emergency shelter for newly arriving migrants. Last week the House voted on the FY23 Supp Budget, and included the state SNAP funding. The Senate Ways and Means committee has now included it in their bill - this is wonderful news!

Action step: Please continue to share your support of the FY23 Supp Budget provisions with your legislators, and encourage them to ensure the SNAP, school meals and shelter funds are in the final package.
